Two nights on what separates good dancers from great ones: connection, timing, and turns, the things that let you move clean through a packed floor at the White Horse or Sam's Town Point. For experienced dancers who want to level up, not a starting point.

Country Polka 1

Country Polka 1

Thursdays, September 17 + 24 · 6:30 to 8:00 PM · one Spot, both nights
Click to learn more

Polka is two-step's wild cousin: fast, bouncy, and a total blast. It looks intimidating from the sidelines, but the step is simpler than it looks, and you'll be up and dancing it after the very first night, ready the next time a dance hall like Coupland or Mercer breaks one out. Open to anyone.

Country Waltz 1

Country Waltz 1

Mondays, September 21 + 28 · 6:30 to 8:00 PM · one Spot, both nights

The prettiest dance in the room, and easier than it looks. Two nights and you'll have the step, the 3/4 timing, and the ease to move smooth around the room. It's the one everyone wishes they knew. Open to anyone.

A few dips and leans you can drop into a song and actually pull off. You'll learn to lead them so your partner feels safe, with a clean, easy way back up. A little showy, a lot of fun, and easier on your back than they look.

Two more positions for your vocabulary, and they hook right into moves you already know. Add both in one night and leave with more to play with out on the dance floor, the kind of variety that keeps a dance from getting stale.

Two of the most-loved positions in honky-tonk two-step, close, playful, and fun to lead. In one night you'll learn to get in, get out, and string them together so they hold up out on the dance floor. The moves that make people smile watching you dance.

Some songs are just too fast to two-step. This one-night class hands you a gear for the fast ones, so when the band at Little Longhorn or the Continental Club picks up the tempo and everyone else stalls, you keep dancing.

More than a dance class

  • Meet a ton of new people. You'll keep running into them on dance floors all over town.
  • Live music hits different. Once you can dance to a band, you never hear one the same way again.
  • A few hours out of your head. It's hard to stew about your week when you're keeping time with a live band.
  • Get dressed up. The perfect reason to bust out the western wear!
  • Move your body and have a blast. The fun kind of exercise, the kind you forget is exercise.
  • No partner needed. Come solo and rotate with the room, or bring someone and stay together.
  • A real skill you keep for good. The dances you'll actually use at every Austin honky-tonk.

This is how people fall in love with Austin. Come find your people on the dance floor. Experience the city in a whole new way.

"Double or Nothing Two Step has completely transformed my experience of living in Austin. Three months ago, I had never two-stepped before, and now it's become the best part of my week. I've taken both their beginner and intermediate studio series, along with many public lessons, and every class feels welcoming, fun, and easy to follow. If you're thinking about learning to two-step, this is hands down the best place to start."

"The advanced studio series was exactly what I was hoping for. Great details, techniques, and pacing. I'll definitely be signing up for the next one!"

I Ford (Google)

"By far, the best country dance instructors in Austin. I've attended both the beginners and advanced classes. The instruction and moves are top notch. The instructors are knowledgeable, approachable and fun."

Questions

Dance Class FAQ

Don't see your question? Email howdy@doubleornothingtwostep.com and we'll answer.

Do I need a partner?

No. You never need a partner for any Double or Nothing Two-Step class. Solo dancers rotate all night and instructors dance in the rotation, so everyone gets plenty of time on the dance floor. Come with a partner and you can stay together or rotate with the class.

I have never danced. Where do I start?

Start with the Honky-Tonk Bootcamp for a one-afternoon taste of the three most popular honky-tonk dances on Saturday, August 22, or Beginner Honky-Tonk Two-Step to learn two-step over two nights. Both start from zero.

What is a Lead, Follow, or Couple Spot?

Leads guide the dance, follows respond to the lead. Book a Lead or Follow Spot for the role you want to learn. A Couple Spot is for two people dancing together, one lead and one follow (not gender specific), and it saves you money. It is not for two people who both want the same role, that is two separate Spots.

How much does it cost?

Two-week series are $100 for a Lead or Follow Spot and $180 for a Couple Spot, covering both nights, a full 90 minutes each. One-night intermediate classes are 90 minutes too, $50 solo or $90 for a couple. The Honky-Tonk Bootcamp runs a full two hours, $25, or $40 when you bring a friend.

Where are the classes?

Balance Dance Studios, 4544 S Lamar Blvd in South Central Austin. Because it is a private studio there are no walk-ups; registration is in advance only.

What should I wear?

Boots if you have them, or any smooth-soled shoe that lets you turn. Skip sticky rubber soles. Water fountains are on site.

How does the waitlist work?

Join the list and you'll be the first to know when new classes open, before we announce them to the public. Spots are limited, so that head start is the surest way in.

Ready to dance?

Pick your class, grab your Spot, and we'll see you at the studio. No partner needed, all levels welcome.
